Planning for the Long Haul: Designing the Board of the Future

Challenge: This client in the financial services sector had a solid Board of Directors that worked well together. But it worried whether the current mix of Board skills, including industry knowledge and risk-readiness, would be the kind needed to meet the company’s future needs, including those emerging from changing stakeholder expectations.

Approach: Using its experience at the intersection of governance, financial stewardship, compensation and regulation, the GECN Europe team conducted an analysis to identify competencies to “future proof” the Board. This included considering not only the changing competitive landscape of the company but also other factors relating to governance, compensation, regulation, and the various components of risk, from both a financial and reputational perspective.

Result: With the GECN’s help, the company was able to develop a plan for the “Board of the Future.” This included rethinking its Board recruitment strategy and the kind of support Board members need to enhance their competencies and effectiveness.
